An interesting look at collecting Casino and Poker Chips. Are you Sets or Singles and why?
I'm a sets guy. Every set I have has a meaning to me personally. My Rivieras as some of you know are from my days growing up at the Riviera in Las Vegas.
My Mandalay Bay Set is where I've been since leaving the Riv. The Holiday's and Pick Hobsons were the first hoard I stumbled on. Naturally in the sets crowd we actually put the sets in play at home games, meet ups and Tourneys. I've always said "It aint a poker chip if you don't play poker with it. I have some singles that are very rare or just beautiful and would never be played.

I like to think of building sets as reuniting chips separated for many years and are now back as a playable and useful thing.

Neither, because I’d be broke. But I collect images of amazing chips to help inspire my custom sets. So… maybe I’m a singles collector? :ROFLMAO:

PS. Don’t stop collecting. I love ogling the sets and chips everyone shares.

I originally started as a singles collector only. Then, I bought some TRKs in quantity and I can't stop now. So, I've mainly turned into a set collector, but still do buy singles here and there.

Just recently had a handful come in which were very nice! Here's one stand out one from that group

Never seen this before, but it's an instant grail chip.

I'm a set collector, but I'm always up for acquiring singles if I really like them. It helps that I usually have zero chance at ever building a set out of said singles.

Why do their Aces have $5 on them? And how much is that chip worth? Your chip value video didn’t cover yellow.

I have no idea on value. I couldn't find one ever sold. I paid very little for it, so I wouldn't be able to give it a fair enough value.

Hahahah. I was asking what the denom of that chip was, not how much would it sell for. Joke fell flat. :ROFLMAO:

$5!! Well technically $1000. When I was a kid I didn't have the money to buy the higher denom chips (even if they didn't say the value) Sorry :ROFLMAO:

Am I allowed to be both?

Bi Chipual! haha
One of the many disadvantages of being in Canada is the postage rate to send something to me. Many times I would find a great chip, but the postage was more than the single. So this lead me to the natural conclusion that it was "cheaper" to buy things by the rack and get them sent at maybe 2x the cost of sending a single chip. So I have a large selection of racks that could, and have been put together into sets, but mostly exist as racks. So that is why I am Bi.

My daughter works at NC so I got 2 of these. 1 for each of our desks!

Sets.

Mostly for the same reasons as in the OP. I like to play with them. Yeah, I sometimes get a bit scared/angry when someone starts getting too rough with them. They are my babies! But... at the same time, they should be used, so I don't mind that much.

I collect sets based solely on looks and my financial feasibility to obtain it. Many sets don't that mean much to me from the start. But as I play a set, they come to mean more to me as I build new memories with them. Especially when I play with my family.
So, some sets I wouldn't sell. Others are sets that I have yet to build these fond memories.

I've also noticed that I tend to gravitate towards sets that are pleasing to my eye. And I've noticed that I tend to like darker colored chips (like Sterling 25s, IG secondary 5). I don't know why but 🤷‍♂️.

The only time I ever get singles, is when I get sample sets. But then, I guess, those can be counted as a "set" too—because it's in the name.

So, that was the long way to say that I don't care for singles. 😜
