Recently tried to send a gift to a friend and one government or the other doesn't like it if they don't get some kind of cut out of the deal. Really tax on a gift.
Screw right off...........

I bought something on Ebay from Canada for like $600. Tax alone was ~$50. I don't get it.

Tell me about it. That, combined with the expensive shipping of Canada Post, I often wonder how people make a go of places like eBay.

We're taxed on imported items valued at over $20 CAD ($14 USD), or gifts above $60 CAD ($43 USD). So make sure every gift you mail to me is worth less than $43 ;)

I should also add that when it is above that value, we also have to use their designated brokerage service whether it's from USPS, UPS etc (which is usually around $25) - or you can self declare but it's a whole ordeal. I remember ordering some chip samples that I think the vendor put down as $50 and I ended up paying something like $35 in taxes and fees.
